According to Joystiq.com, they were recently informed by a reader who took a survey concerning a forthcoming iPhone/iPod Touch app titled Mass Effect: Jacob’s Story. The survey stated that this incarnation in the Mass Effect world will star a hero by the name of Jacob Taylor – which sounds more like the name of a twelve year old boy than the unlikely hero in a Mass Effect story – who is said to be “a biotic-powered super-soldier who stumbles across a plot to terrorize civilization’s greatest beacon of hope.”

Now is it just me, or does this all seem a bit strange? excuse me for being a bit skeptical, but if this is a legit release in the Mass Effect franchise, then you can count me out. It all just seems a bit made up, and not very well. But that’s just my inner spidey senses tingling. Or maybe jock itch.

The screenshots for this new story reveal an almost anime-esque/cartoonish quality, while the combat looks to play out as a top down shooter. The survey also claims that the plot to Jacob’s Story will take place before that of Mass Effect 2 and bring to light a bit of the backstory to the characters featured in the console release. All of this and it will only cost $2.99 and about two hours of game time.

I can’t really say that I’m excited about this, or that I necessarily believe it to be true. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what EA and BioWare have to say about it to be sure.
